*cough* the American and British manual transmission conversations are different in context and implication *cough*

Nope, still prefer the manual. Even in Austin. I did drive an auto for several years, so it’s not like I haven’t tried it, and I understand why most people choose autos.

And driving is mostly enjoyable, washing clothes is as boring as a one legged dog on a hot day. So the comparison doesn’t quite work.

Yes, but I still agree that... that stuff’s old . Get with the times.

... Even though the “times” in ‘Murica are texting, eating sandwiches, playing on tablets, texting, clipping toenails, and reading the newspaper all at once while driving.

Honestly, if there were more DCTs that trickled down there’d be a chance I’d buy one. Right now, pretty much every car with a DCT in my price range has a manual option and most of those manuals are better. On the other hand, certain traditional automatics do give me pause, like the Lexus 8-speed. Toyota was doing locking torque converters in 1984, they know what’s up from the engineering side.

Once I own a couple of manual cars I’ll settle for a DCT since they’re “more fun.” Just kidding, it’ll feel no different from an automatic to me...

Modern autos are more efficient and super smooth, as well as often faster shifting than manuals. But they still are nowhere near as fun. Also, when an auto takes a dump, it’s really expensive to replace, whereas manuals can be rebuilt by a competent shop. Need to change the trans fluid on your new VW? That will cost you next month’s mortgage. God help you if it breaks, those transmissions are insanely expensive.

I’ll take my old fudddy duddy third pedal, thanks.

Automatic for your commuter, manual for the 2nd car. At least that's the plan when I get a 2nd car.

I bet that 70% statistic would change significantly if the cost for an automatic was the same as a manual in the UK.
